Summary

The Silmarillion is an account of the Elder Days, of the First Age of Tolkien’s world。 It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part。 The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor。

This gives such great context for the rest of his works。 A good cleanser after the Amazon thing。

I finished this book after reading it aling with a podcast (That's what I'm Tolkien about)。Now, I'm not sure if I would have been able to finish it without the podcast (which meant reading roughly one chapter a week), but I hust have to respect Tolkien for this work。 It's phenomenal。And yes, it majorly ready like the Bible。 But as someone who loves Lord of the Rings, I appreciate the world building and am amazed by Tolkien's mind all over again。 I finished this book after reading it aling with a podcast (That's what I'm Tolkien about)。Now, I'm not sure if I would have been able to finish it without the podcast (which meant reading roughly one chapter a week), but I hust have to respect Tolkien for this work。 It's phenomenal。And yes, it majorly ready like the Bible。 But as someone who loves Lord of the Rings, I appreciate the world building and am amazed by Tolkien's mind all over again。 。。。more

Fun Fact: You get a certificate of achievement from the Tolkien Estates if you can make it all the way through without quitting!

This book is about many elves that crafted jewels and became obssesed about them。 It also provides the readers with resumes to Other Tolkien books concerning Miďdle Earth。

Read this after watching Rings of Power。 Glad Tolkien’s calmed down with Lord of the Rings, but loved reading how crazy the early days of middle earth were

Halil Karamut

This book is not complicated as much as people say, so every one can read it without fear

I finished it。 Was not a fun experience。 Do not recommend。

Still magical, still wonderful。 This is probably my fifth time reading it, if not more。

Michael

Amazingly epic。

Pacing was a bit strange。 There was so much going on at once that I was completely lost until I got about halfway through and finally recognized some character names。 By the last quarter of it, I finally started to enjoy it。 3⭐️

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Call me fatty boombatty at the buffet because I fucking ate this shit up。 This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, not as good as children of hurin so doesn’t take the top spot but still an absolutely stunning bible of Tolkien’s legendarium。 All of the characters in this book felt important, even if my tiny rat mine couldn’t wrap my head around remembering every one, all of them felt like relics of old and felt so like intensely mythological it absolutely gave what I wanted it to。 They were Call me fatty boombatty at the buffet because I fucking ate this shit up。 This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, not as good as children of hurin so doesn’t take the top spot but still an absolutely stunning bible of Tolkien’s legendarium。 All of the characters in this book felt important, even if my tiny rat mine couldn’t wrap my head around remembering every one, all of them felt like relics of old and felt so like intensely mythological it absolutely gave what I wanted it to。 They were all courageous and wise but still sometimes flawed but only ever flawed through things like pride, oaths (*cough cough* Feanor looking at u), and kinship which made it feel like I didn’t care that there were THREE kinslayings。 It truly was a slay by all meanings of the word。 The Noldor are one of my fave crews of all time。 They just felt so majestic and powerful and so concentrated in terms of just being like so full of old lore I loved it, shout-out to Fingolfin u really are my babes。 I think I just loved the fact that I could so easily and do headcannon that this all actually happened。 The story aswell was just stunning, like a perfect basket weaved of tragedy, beauty, and valour, filled with the suffering of all the mfs who lived in Arda; it really is just so harrowing watching the entire thing play out, characters and reader are in a permanent fuge state of grief, I cried on the train reading Fingolfins death and think my tears were valid and deserved, it was truly harrowing。 The Valar as a set of Demi gods was one of my fave aspects of this book。 Morgoth as a character is literally one of the worst mfs I ever did meet and like genuinely it sounds so dumb because he’s literally the villain but he’s just so fucking evil, literally his malice will always just shock me because he’s just a cunt。 I love the use of fate and doom in this too, it makes you in a way have more sympathy for the characters in a third person way? Idk if that makes sense but in a way that makes you feel bad for them because they think they’re gonna be victorious in whatever they’re doing but you know that Manwe was not capping when he tells them they will die if they do it and *SPOILER ALERT* pretty much everyone of them dies :( I think my favourite thing about these books is how tragic they are, like you can see all the elves and men fighting as hard as they can against fate but it’s just always fruitless, but if a Sisyphus moment if I do say。 Writing style again absolute perfection for me, not too much description, very to the point, but still movingly poetic when it needs to be。 I think the beauty in the way he describes anything elven or anything in valinor in comparison to the relatively dry descriptions really makes it stand out and brings home how majestic this world really is。 Additionally, Tolkein really is good at describing things which are big in this, whether it’s a cry of anguish from Morgoth or Ancagalon the Black, or the Temple to Melkor in Numenor it all just has such a sense of vastness and makes you feel small which I think made me just feel in even more amazement of the world he’s built。 Small side note here I LOVE the use of the word terrible in this book。 Especially when it’s not describing something bad, like Manwe or even Luthien, these characters who are fighting against evil being seen as terrible because they’re just so potent just really hit me for some reason。 It’s just such a perfect word to encapsulate their wrath and power against evil。 Idk I liked it。 The ONLY thing I didn’t like however would be the long passages of just names, it’s in some ways pointless because there’s no way the average reader including myself would be able to remember all those names at just first glance; the amount of times I had to refer to the index at the back was insane。 However I think this plays a valuable role in the world building because these characters might be mentioned a few times in other stories and are related to main characters and I enjoy those little Easter egg type things where it all links up like a massive web and you’re like ‘oh hey Gwindor son of Guillian didn’t expect to see u here’。 Those ones yk 🤭。 This book gets a lot of stick, and I understand why, it’s alot of names and technicalities and places and it’s alot to take in but I think with somewhat of a backing knowledge of the events of the first age it’s an absolute dream to read。 I give this five stars, would give six if I could but I can’t so I shan’t。 Bury me with this book and make sure I go out in a tragic battle。 。。。more

I wanted to re read it before I watch The Rings of Power。 Tolkien is such a good writer。 His books are like being with family - who battle for good and put their lives on the line every day

Puts a lot of LOTR into perspective, unrivalled world building, not far off being an actual bible for another world。

"The Silmarillion" is, without a doubt, a tougher read than "The Lord of the Rings。" There are a host of characters, places, and events to keep track of, many of which have multiple names, and many difficult to pronounce。 I was often grateful for the index, which could provide a quick reminder of who that one person was again, and about half the time also chagrined with the spoiler the index provided。 That said, there are many tales packed into this book, woven into one another and with "The Lor "The Silmarillion" is, without a doubt, a tougher read than "The Lord of the Rings。" There are a host of characters, places, and events to keep track of, many of which have multiple names, and many difficult to pronounce。 I was often grateful for the index, which could provide a quick reminder of who that one person was again, and about half the time also chagrined with the spoiler the index provided。 That said, there are many tales packed into this book, woven into one another and with "The Lord of the Rings," the whole of which offers an even greater appreciation for the depth J。R。R。 Tolkien achieved in his world building。Plus, the whole thing is pretty cool。 If you thought Smaug and Shelob were scary, wait till you meet Glaurung and Ungoliant。 。。。more

It is vast in scope, detailed world building, full of religio-historic tropes and is essential reading for fans of High Fantasy。 What it isn't is a quick easy read or full of character development。 It's also my 5th reread。 It is vast in scope, detailed world building, full of religio-historic tropes and is essential reading for fans of High Fantasy。 What it isn't is a quick easy read or full of character development。 It's also my 5th reread。 。。。more

Amazing!!! Sssooo much more accessible than its reputation, and much more narrativized than I was expecting too。 A book I wanted to start again immediately after finishing。 Much flashier than LotR, it's no wonder to me why so many fans' favorite characters are out of this book because there are just endless character moments of badassery in addition to all the background lore stuff。 Amazing!!!
